Notes on glazing types

Dual pane / IGU (insulated glass unit). Two panes with a sealed air or argon gap. Film adds heat to the inner pane and can stress the perimeter seal, so film choice matters far more here than on single pane. Tinted IGUs already absorb heat — that is why so many films drop to Conditional on dual-pane tinted.

Low-E. The coating position changes everything. A #3-surface (soft-coat, room side of the outboard pane) unit behaves differently from a #2-surface high-performance unit. If you do not know the surface, do not guess — measure it or ask the glazier.

Laminated glass. Two panes bonded with a PVB interlayer. It absorbs more solar energy than monolithic glass; darker films raise the risk.

Annealed vs. tempered. Tempered glass tolerates far higher thermal gradients. Several films are approved on tempered glass only for exactly this reason.

What is not on this chart

SC900 decorative films (Etchmark, Dusted Crystal, Frosted Sparkle) are cast vinyl decorative products and are not listed on Avery Dennison’s architectural FTG chart. Follow Avery Dennison Instructional Bulletin 1.30 and evaluate thermal stress on a per-job basis. Automotive films are governed by a separate application guide.
